What it is
Charcoal treated to open up a network of tiny pores, which gives it a very large surface. Sea Witch and Black Magic both list it as charcoal powder, and both descriptions call it activated charcoal.
What it does
Its porous surface holds on to oil and grime, which wash away when you rinse. It also turns Sea Witch and Black Magic black: in Black Magic it is blended into the honey and glycerin until the mix looks like black oil.
Why it’s clean
One plainly named ingredient doing two jobs: it helps lift oil, and it colours both formulas black without an added dye.
