The standard

What clean means here

'Clean' isn't a regulated word. So here is exactly what we mean by it, and you can check the ingredient lists on this site for yourself.

Read: what clean means here
  1. No sulfates

Sea Witch cleans with coco-glucoside, a mild cleanser made from coconut oil and plant sugar.

    Coco-glucoside

  2. No parabens

Any product that needs preserving uses only safe, COSMOS-approved preservative systems. None of our formulas lists parabens.

    Radish root ferment, Lactobacillus +1

  3. No silicones

Slip and softness come from plant oils and butters, jojoba and beeswax.

    Jojoba oil, Castor oil +4

  4. Fragrance, researched first

Some of our fragrances are synthetic. Every fragrance is researched before we use it, and is free of known carcinogens, mutagens and organ toxicants. When a formula contains fragrance, its ingredient list says so.

  5. No mineral oil or petrolatum

Plant oils and butters do the softening: sunflower, olive, castor, meadowfoam, black raspberry seed, jojoba, cupuaçu and shea.

Sunflower seed oil, Olive oil +6

  6. No FD&C or D&C dyes

Colour comes from charcoal and mineral pigments, and the shimmer from synthetic mica (synthetic fluorphlogopite), which is made rather than mined, avoiding the problems tied to mica mining.

    Activated charcoal, Titanium dioxide +3

  7. Every ingredient named and explained

The full ingredient list of every product, in label order, on every label and on this site, with a page for each ingredient: what it is, what it does and why we use it.

What clean doesn't promise

In the US, 'clean' and 'natural' have no legal definition for cosmetics. Any brand can use them to mean anything. Here they mean the points above, and nothing more.

It doesn't mean free of chemicals. Everything is made of chemicals, water and honey included.

It doesn't mean everything comes straight from nature. A few ingredients are made in a lab on purpose, and some of our fragrances are synthetic. Synthetic mica is made rather than mined, the iron oxides used in cosmetics are made synthetically, which keeps impurities out, and panthenol is made to a consistent grade.

It doesn't mean nothing can irritate. Essential oils, bee products and coconut-derived ingredients don't suit everyone. Read the list, and patch test anything new on your inner arm for a day before you use it on your face.

And it isn't a promise about results. These are cosmetics: they cleanse, polish, moisturize and change how skin looks and feels. They are not medicines.

Every ingredient in the collection, grouped by family. A dot means it is in that formula, and the bigger the dot, the higher it sits on the label. A ring marks a hero ingredient. Choose a product to see its ingredients around it, or an ingredient to see where it goes.
